We search for a nearby shop, check a train route, read news, find a recipe, watch a video, look for a job, learn something for school, send an email, use a map or translate a sentence\u2014and very often, somewhere in that process, Google is involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Google did not begin as the enormous technology ecosystem we know today. Its story started with two students, a university research project and a simple but powerful question: <strong>How can the enormous amount of information on the World Wide Web be organized so that people can find useful information quickly?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, Google faces perhaps its biggest technological challenge yet: <strong>AI-powered search and AI assistants.<\/strong> Has AI really shaken Google? Has Google&#8217;s workload gone down? How much of the world&#8217;s search activity still belongs to Google? Can another company or even a government build a Google-like system? And what is Google doing now to compete with AI?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us understand the whole journey step by step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. When Did Google Start?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story began at <strong>Stanford University in the mid-1990s<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Larry Page and Sergey Brin met at Stanford and began working on a search project. Their early search engine was called <strong>BackRub<\/strong>. The idea was different from simply counting keywords on a webpage: they examined relationships between webpages and links to estimate the importance of pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s own history says the project began in 1995, the two worked from their dorm rooms, and the search engine was initially called BackRub. It was later renamed Google. (<a href=\"https:\/\/about.google\/intl\/ar_ALL\/our-story\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">About Google<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google was officially incorporated as a company in <strong>September 1998<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So there are two dates worth remembering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>1995\u201396:<\/strong> Research and early search-engine development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>1998:<\/strong> Google officially became a company<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Who Created Google?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two principal founders were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Larry Page<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Larry Page was a Stanford computer-science graduate student who developed the idea of using the structure of links between webpages to help determine their importance. Google&#8217;s own research biography says he met Sergey Brin at Stanford and together they developed and ran Google, which began operating in 1998. (<a href=\"https:\/\/research.google\/people\/lawrencepage\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Google Research<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sergey Brin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sergey Brin was also a Stanford graduate student. He worked with Page on the mathematical and technical side of the search project. Google&#8217;s biography says the two worked together at Stanford and formed Google Inc. in 1998. (<a href=\"https:\/\/research.google\/people\/sergeybrin\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Google Research<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their partnership became one of the most important collaborations in the history of the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Why Was Google Different From Earlier Search Engines?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The internet already had search engines before Google.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s important innovation was its approach to understanding the relationships between websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A webpage could be considered more important when other important webpages linked to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This became associated with <strong>PageRank<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In simple language:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>More meaningful links \u2192 greater authority signal \u2192 potentially better ranking<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was not the only factor in Google&#8217;s ranking system, but it helped Google produce highly relevant results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That simple idea helped Google become extraordinarily successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. From a Dorm Room to a Garage<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s early story has almost become part of internet history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the project grew, the founders moved beyond their dorm rooms and worked from a garage in Menlo Park, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s own history describes the early office as a garage belonging to Susan Wojcicki and notes that the company received a <strong>$100,000 investment from Sun Microsystems co-founder Andy Bechtolsheim in 1998<\/strong>. How Did Google Become So Powerful?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google did not remain only a search engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the years, it built or acquired businesses and technologies in many areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its ecosystem now includes products and services such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Google Search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gmail<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Maps<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>YouTube<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Android<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chrome<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Drive<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Photos<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Translate<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Cloud<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google Play<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gemini<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Google AI tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s founders themselves noted in 2019 that the company&#8217;s ecosystem had expanded from Search into Maps, Photos, YouTube, Android, Chrome, Cloud and machine learning technologies. (<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/alphabet\/letter-from-larry-and-sergey\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">blog.google<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why saying <strong>\u201cGoogle is just a search engine\u201d<\/strong> is no longer accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. How Much Information Has Google Collected or Indexed?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an interesting question, but there is an important difference between <strong>Google&#8217;s index<\/strong> and <strong>all the data Google possesses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google does not publish one simple number saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have exactly X petabytes of internet data.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The web is constantly changing. Google crawls webpages, updates information, removes outdated pages and adds new pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, an exact total amount of data Google has \u201cabsorbed\u201d cannot responsibly be given.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s mission has always been to organize the world&#8217;s information and make it universally accessible and useful. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/googleblogs\/pdfs\/google_introduction.pdf?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Google<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So rather than thinking of Google as having simply \u201cdownloaded the whole internet,\u201d it is better to think of Google as maintaining a <strong>huge, continuously changing index of information available on the web<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. How Many Companies Has Google Acquired?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google has also grown through acquisitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Crunchbase&#8217;s current company database, Google has made <strong>271 acquisitions<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/google?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Crunchbase<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, acquisition databases can differ depending on whether they count Alphabet subsidiaries, investments, mergers and historical transactions differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some famous Google acquisitions have included companies and technologies connected with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>YouTube<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Android<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Waze<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fitbit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DeepMind<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Looker<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DoubleClick<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These acquisitions helped Google expand far beyond search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Did AI Really Shake Google?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes\u2014but \u201cshake\u201d does not mean \u201cdestroy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arrival of generative AI changed what people expect from search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional search works approximately like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Question \u2192 Keywords \u2192 Links \u2192 Open websites \u2192 Read \u2192 Find answer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI assistants introduced another experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Question \u2192 Conversation \u2192 Generated answer \u2192 Follow-up question<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This was a major change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People suddenly realized that instead of searching five different things, they could ask one long question and continue the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google therefore had to respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. How Much Has Google&#8217;s Search Load Fallen Because of AI?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is <strong>no reliable public percentage<\/strong> showing that Google&#8217;s overall search-server workload has fallen by a specific amount because of AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, the situation is more complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traditional searches may change as people use AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But AI-powered search itself requires significant computing resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Less traditional searching does not automatically mean less computing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google may perform additional AI inference, reasoning, ranking and multimodal processing for some queries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, AI can change the <em>type<\/em> of computing Google performs rather than simply reducing its workload.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Is AI Actually Taking Google Users Away?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI has certainly created competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People now use:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>AI chatbots<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI search engines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>YouTube search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social-media search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specialized research tools<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Google remains extraordinarily dominant in worldwide search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to StatCounter&#8217;s July 2026 worldwide data, Google accounted for approximately <strong>91.31% of search-engine market share<\/strong>, compared with about 4.47% for Bing. (<a href=\"https:\/\/gs.statcounter.com\/search-engine-market-share\/all-globe?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">StatCounter Global Stats<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is <strong>search-engine market share, not the percentage of individual people who use Google<\/strong>. Those two measurements should not be confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It shows, however, that despite the AI revolution, Google remains overwhelmingly dominant in traditional web search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. So Has Google Actually Lost Its Position?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not in the sense of losing search dominance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What has changed is the <strong>nature of the competition<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, Google mainly competed against other search engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now it also competes for the user&#8217;s attention against:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>ChatGPT-style assistants<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI search systems<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>AI browsers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social-media search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Video search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Specialized research platforms<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a much broader competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12. Google&#8217;s Answer: AI Overviews<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of Google&#8217;s major responses has been <strong>AI Overviews<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of showing only a list of links, Google can provide an AI-generated summary for certain queries and provide links for further exploration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google says AI Overviews are particularly useful for more complicated questions that previously could require multiple searches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This represents a major change in the traditional Google Search page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13. What Is Google AI Mode?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google has also introduced <strong>AI Mode<\/strong> as a more conversational search experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google describes AI Mode as designed for complex, multi-part questions and follow-up questions. It can use advanced reasoning and multimodal capabilities, allowing users to work with text, images and other forms of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means a user can move from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy is it important?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCompare it with another one.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The search experience becomes more like a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14. The Future: Google vs AI or Google + AI?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most interesting possibility is that the future may not be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Google OR AI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Google + AI<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google has enormous search infrastructure, a huge user base, Android, YouTube, Maps, Chrome, Cloud and AI research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI gives Google another way to understand what people are asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s own recent Search direction shows that the company is moving toward more conversational, multimodal and reasoning-based search. (<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/alphabet\/letter-from-larry-and-sergey\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">blog.google<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion: Google Is Not Disappearing\u2014It Is Changing<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google began as a small research project created by <strong>Larry Page and Sergey Brin<\/strong>. It grew from Stanford dorm rooms to a garage, then into one of the world&#8217;s most important technology companies. (<a href=\"https:\/\/about.google\/intl\/ar_ALL\/our-story\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">About Google<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has indexed and organized an enormous amount of web information, built a huge ecosystem and acquired hundreds of companies. Crunchbase currently lists <strong>271 Google acquisitions<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crunchbase.com\/organization\/google?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">Crunchbase<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then AI arrived and changed the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI has challenged the traditional search model, but the available worldwide search data shows that Google still has around <strong>91% search-engine market share<\/strong>. (<a href=\"https:\/\/gs.statcounter.com\/search-engine-market-share\/all-globe?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">StatCounter Global Stats<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the story is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAI came and Google finished.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more accurate story is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAI came, challenged Google, and forced Google to change.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google is now trying to turn Search into something much more conversational, multimodal and intelligent through AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini-powered experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future may therefore be very different from the Google we knew 10 or 20 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old Google asked:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat are you searching for?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future Google may increasingly ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat are you trying to accomplish?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that could be the next major chapter in Google&#8217;s journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Google is one of those technologies that has become so deeply connected with everyday life that many people do not even think about how much they depend on it.
