1-Lenovo’s motorola phones violate Ericsson’s 5G patents: U.S. Trade Commission
The U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) announced on Tuesday that smartphones manufactured by Lenovo’s Motorola Mobility infringe on Ericsson’s patents. This finding could lead to a ban on U.S. imports of Motorola devices if the decision is upheld.
Initial Determination on Patent Infringement
An ITC Administrative Law Judge, in a preliminary ruling, concluded that Motorola smartphones violate Ericsson’s patents related to 5G wireless technology. The ruling marks a significant step in Ericsson’s ongoing patent licensing dispute with Lenovo.
On December 17, 2024, the Initial Determination (ID) on the violation of Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930 was issued. The findings include:
- Violation of U.S. Patent No. 10,426,817: Claims 10, 13-15 were infringed and found valid.
- Violation of U.S. Patent No. 10,306,669: Claims 8, 9, 15, and 17 were infringed and found valid.
- Violation of U.S. Patent No. 11,317,342: Claims 34 and 39 were infringed and found valid.
- Violation of U.S. Patent No. 11,515,893: Claim 4 was infringed and found valid.
The ruling also established that Ericsson met the domestic industry requirements, including both technical and economic prongs, under Section 337.
Broader Implications and Ongoing Legal Battles
The full USITC is set to issue a final ruling in April 2025. Meanwhile, Lenovo has denied the allegations and criticized Ericsson’s approach as part of a broader international patent dispute. Both companies are engaged in related legal battles in South America, the UK, and North Carolina.
In earlier cases, Ericsson secured preliminary court orders banning sales of Lenovo smartphones in Brazil and Colombia. However, in October, a U.S. appeals court revived Lenovo’s request to block enforcement of those ban
Lenovo’s Response
Lenovo expressed disappointment with the ITC’s preliminary ruling, stati inng:
Today’s Initial Determination from the US International Trade Commission’s Administrative Law Judge, while disappointing, is not unexpected given Ericsson’s aggressive multi-jurisdictional campaign against Lenovo. As a global technology leader and patent owner, Lenovo has always been a willing licensee, yet Ericsson has repeatedly declined to license its standard essential patents to us on FRAND terms.
The company also criticized what it described as pressure tactics by Ericsson, aimed at forcing settlements through high licensing fees. Lenovo remains hopeful that the UK court’s upcoming rate-setting case in April 2025 will rule in its favor.

3-Samsung doesn’t expect a big Galaxy S25 and Galaxy Z Flip 7 sales increase
: We’re about a month from the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S25 series. A new leak today revealed that the Galaxy S25 launch event may take place on January 22. The company held a meeting this week to finalize its strategy for the upcoming flagship lineup and the Galaxy Z foldable series that will be launched later next year.
While Samsung is cautiously optimistic that the Galaxy S25 will bring in marginally more sales than its predecessor, it’s not too bullish on the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s ability to significantly increase sales
It may make fewer Galaxy Z Flip 7 units than its predecessor
Based on rumored targets it has provided supply chain partners, Samsung is going to produce 14.8 million, 6.6 million, and 16 million units of the Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra respectively. It’s not surprising that the Ultra is on top as this model has consistently been outselling its siblings and obviously has better margins for the company.
On the other hand, it appears that Samsung isn’t confident that the Galaxy Z Flip 7 would bring in more sales than its predecessor, as it has reportedly set a 3 million unit production target for the upcoming clamshell foldable. This is a big reduction from the 4.2 million unit target it’s believed to have set for the Galaxy Z Flip 6 last year.
It would be surprising if this is indeed the case, given that last year’s foldable wasn’t a major upgrade, and you’d think a lot of people would have waited another year to upgrade so that they benefit from the significant improvements the Galaxy Z Flip 7 will bring, such as the larger cover display.
: Perhaps this is the reason why Samsung is expected to launch a more affordable Galaxy Z Flip FE next year, in a bid to expand the overall shipments of its clamshell foldable.
Samsung can always ramp up production if the market response is more favorable, so it’s not like the company is locked into these targets. It’s possible that Samsung is looking to prevent an outcome where it just ends up with a lot of unsold inventory.
